i guess it always takes an incident like this to make everyone wake up and take notice. something big like this always has to happen before you realise you have to treasure the people around you cos you never know if you'll be seeing them tomorrow. something big like this to happen before you can ask yourself what you really want in life and how you're gonna get there because we really don't know what's going to happen in the next minute.

It's just scary how fragile life is, and how things can tragically change in the span of a few minutes.

i was watching the news report and what really struck me was seeing the pictures of the 5 guys at the tent, and the online report caption saying how their bodies were being embalmed so that they can be flown back to singapore. That was when i really thought, hey... that's it, i guess. nothing more to say, they are really gone. and as a fellow rower, i feel the pain. the parents' tears, the heartaches and the rest of the n-team who must be feeling terrible. it's scary.

they died doing what they loved. i hope that's enough for them.

Five Singaporeans missing in Cambodian boat race mishap: officials

SINGAPORE: Five members of the Singapore national dragon boat team are missing, feared drowned, and 17 others were hospitalised after their boat capsized on Friday during Cambodia’s annual water festival river races, officials said.

The mishap occurred late in the afternoon on the first day of the races, which draw millions to the capital Phnom Penh, a police official told AFP.

The Singaporeans’ boat capsized as the crew of 22, aged between 20 and 30 years, were rowing back to the starting line, at the end of the 1.5-km Cambodia-Asean Traditional Boat Race in which 10 teams competed.

According to Mr Kwek Siew Jin, president of the Singapore Dragon Boat Association, at about 4.20pm, the boat was swept by a sudden wave and hit a pontoon, causing the boat to overturn.

Resue boats were immediately deployed, but five of the crew could not be found. An extensive search was mounted.

The crew was not wearing lifejackets for this race, according to the association.

In a statement last night, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the ministry and the Singapore Embassy in Cambodia were working with the local authorities in the search and rescue operations.

The association told Today it had contacted the family members of the missing five Singaporeans, and it was working closely with the MFA to facilitate their passage to Cambodia.

The five missing crew members had been training with the national team for a year. The SIngaporean contingent of 29, which included officials, was due to be back in Singapore on Sunday.

Accidents are common during the boat races, which involve dragon boats crewed by as many as 70 rowers, on the sometimes-choppy waters in front of Phnom Penh’s royal palace. - /ac

you know how you normally form relationships with people... but at other times you form relationships with things around you instead cos they remind you of something or some emotion you felt at a particular point of time and you start to associate that emotion or person with the thing.

a friend asked me how long i've know you guys and she was shocked when i said, "well, technically and seriously, about a year."
she continued, "wah... only a year and you're all so close?"

and last night proved just so. =) i figured if the breko staff didnt walk by ever so often, or if they hadnt already locked the toilets and started cleaning their stoves, we would have stayed till forever talking about any and everything.

i was feeling disgustingly lousy in school cos presentations and endless reports seemed to really have taken a toll this semester. A very innocent suggestion of going to la-kopi and i got what i wished for. =) In less than fifteen minutes, my mood took a big turn from dread and sian-ess to anticipation and happiness.

you guys have the ability to make me uber uber happy and i hope you all know that.

i realised donating blood is a de-stressor for me cos i happen to do it after every major exam... and so very-stressed-me went down to the blood bank after school today. I remembered they close at 6.30, but i totally forgot they were closed on mondays! CHUI ME =(

oh well... i took it as a sign to do some shopping at chinatown. I swear it's a good place to shop la... you find all kinds of nonsense there at lovely prices! haha...

you know, this is kinda amazing, but i actually almost kinda forgotten we were 4th for the Plate Finals for this year's regatta until I saw one of the tags on the tonnes of pics we snapped. i mean, we were not "kicked out in the semi-finals" or "just made it through heats" or "had to pack bags and go home on the first day". haha... i very nearly really forgot we were 4th! (i don't care what finals it was, it was a FINAL). i'm quite impressed by myself. haha...

this is THE happiest i've been in months... i was grinning like a fool in school today just thinking about what happened over the weekend. Of course I know this wont last and i know we'd have many issues to face up to very soon. But for these couple of days, let me bask in our glory a little and drown myself in the endless photos and videos of what is till now, our greatest race ever. i hearts you all cos all the hard work, sweat, tears, heartache and disappointments have been worth it.

and i'm happy. i hope you all are too.

the race felt good, not our 100% yet so i expect we have more to give tmr. semi finals, one shot at the finals... it's all building up and it feels good. we row our race, never-mind who they are cos we're gonna burn them anyway. one shot.

one song, one photo, one lovely conversation with a dear friend and suddenly i feel things are good again. i feel so much more at ease with myself now and i think i know how to face this situation better now. loves.
